An Accident Is Like An Earthquake — Beware Aftershocks
10 Injured In Long Island Bus-Van Crash
Suffolk County Police Say 3 People Are In Critical Condition
NESCONSET, N.Y. (CBS) ? At least 10 people were injured, including three critically, after a charter bus and a van collided head-on in Nesconset in Suffolk County on Friday afternoon.
The accident happened shortly before 4 p.m. on Route 347 at Southern Boulevard just north of Lake Ronkonkoma and between the Lake Grove and Village of the Branch communities.
It’s not known how the accident happened or who was at fault. (my emphasis) Full article here:
Our hearts and prayers go out to the victims whenever we read about such a tragedy.
But after all the grief and the pain subside there’s another sort of tragedy for the businesses and drivers involved. How as at fault. Was the van or the bus speeding, weaving from lane to lane, had the drivers been on the road too long, did either driver brake before the crash … the list goes on.
GPS can’t prevent all accidents but a simple, no monthly cost tracking unit on each vehicle could mitigate the aftershock of this accident tremendously:
- Second by second ‘crash recorder’ proof of speeds and braking
- Hours of service determinations for each driver
- Routes the vehicles were on versus their assigned routes
- The list goes on
The sad part is most companies refuse to implement this proven technology because they think it costs too much.
The truth is, with no accident issues such systems easily pay for themselves in a few months by saving fuel, labor costs and maintenance problems.
If a fatal accident does occur the savings become priceless. Are you tracking yet?
