Buy A GPS and Drive With Your Eyes Closed
I really should have a "Darwinism" category here .. as in people who go out of their way to prove Darwin’s survival of the fittest/early death of the unfit.
Here’s a bus company who bought a GPS navigator to help plan and drive their trips. Smart idea. Then, they left their brains at home … especially the driver involved.
Although the unit was set for a bus, it chose a route through the Washington Park Arboretum that did not provide enough clearance for the nearly 12-foot-high vehicle, Abegg said. The driver told police he did not see the flashing lights or yellow sign posting the bridge height. (my emphasis)
"We haven’t really had serious problems with anything, but here it’s presented a problem that we didn’t consider," Abegg said of the GPS unit. "We just thought it would be a safe route because, why else would they have a selection for a bus?" … full article here.
I don’t know the price of the GPS unit, but apparently it was quite steep, being that someone apparently had to trade in their brain as a down payment. Folks a GPS, either a plain old dashboard navigator, a GPS tracking system (best for business ROI) or a combination unit (note to suppliers, you sure are missing the boat here!) is a great investment.
But it doe not replace a driver’s vision or judgement, nor does it offer an excuse for driving like a fool!
In the US, especially, we seem to be bound and determined to find someone to place the blame on no matter what errors we commit. It’s sick. When you screw up, be a man and accept the fact you screwed up .. do not place the blame on some convenient whipping boy just to try to make yourself look good. You only make yourself look dumber, in my opinion.
